Set in 1906, Ragtime interweaves the fictional stories of a wealthy family from a New York City suburb, an African American family from Harlem and a Jewish immigrant family from Latvia and the Lower East Side, who also encounter historical characters such as Booker T. Washington, Emma Goldman, Henry Ford, Evelyn Nesbit, J.P Morgan and Harry Houdini. The new music of the era, ragtime, permeates the score as a metaphor for a changing world, with its off-beat rhythms, varied speeds and beautiful melodies. Based on the E.L. Doctorow novel Ragtime, the play’s book is by Terrence McNally, with music by Stephen Flaherty and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens.
