THE FANTASTICKS

Directed by Darius Stubbs
Music Directed by Lindsay Miller
Stage Managed by Kate Atherton

Music by Harvey Schmidt
Book and Lyrics by Tom Jones
Based on Les Romanesque by Edmond Rostand.

Since its opening in May 1960 at the Sullivan Secret Street Playhouse in New York, and its subsequent revival at the Jerry Orbach Theatre, The Fantasticks remains the longest-running production of any kind in the history of American theatre.

THE FANTASTICKS is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also provided by MTI. www.MTIshows.com

Seeking performers ages 16 and older of all races, ethnicities, gender identities, gender expressions, and physical abilities to perform in Near West Theatre’s first black box production, The Fantasticks. We strongly encourage artists of color to audition. Artists must be available for evening and weekend rehearsals and must have an enthusiasm for flexibility as we navigate an ever-changing COVID environment. This is an unpaid, volunteer opportunity that pays dividends in loving community and fun.

A note from the director:  The rehearsal process for this show will consist of masked, in-person rehearsal and virtual rehearsals as needed to accommodate cast and/or crew.  Considering our commitment to create a safe community by following CDC recommendations, we are requiring that all actors be vaccinated.  There are no exceptions to this rule.  Near West Theatre will require proof of vaccination upon audition sign-up.

Audition at Near West Theatre!

Participants are led through a group-based audition process that focuses on working as an ensemble. No experience whatsoever is needed. Part of what makes up the NWT "Special Sauce" is our unique audition process, where community-building is baked right into your first interaction with potential castmates.

Auditioners do not need a headshot or resume or 16-bar cut. Simply come as you are, in comfortable clothes, and be ready to engage with your peers.

Our audition process involves group work, in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Actors of all experience levels are led through multiple improvisation exercises, providing every participant equal opportunity to create through word and movement. Auditions focus on play and the creative process, not the product; on working as an ensemble, not solo.

All necessary direction and materials are provided at the audition, and no preparation is necessary. Auditioners are welcome to wear anything that is comfortable for movement.

All individuals should arrive 15 minutes early to register. Anyone arriving after the starting time will be asked to audition at another open date and time. CASTING DECISIONS are posted on this website once final decisions are made.

For more information on the audition process, call the Near West Theatre office at 216-961-9750.
