Music & Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim
Book by Hugh Wheeler
From an adaptation by Christopher Bond
Originally directed on Broadway by Harold Prince
Originally produced on Broadway by Richard Barr, Charles Woodward, Robert Fryer, Mary Lea Johnson, Martin Richards in association with Dean & Judy Manos
After many successful runs on Broadway and a hit movie adaptation, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street has become a household name. Near West Theatre is thrilled to be one of the first in the area to produce the newly adapted school edition of the chilling tale that takes place in 19th century London and features the title character and his pie-shop owning proprietress, Mrs. Lovett, as they scheme to take out the judge who stole Sweeney’s wife and daughter so many years ago. When his thirst for blood expands to his unfortunate customers, Mrs. Lovett takes advantage and discovers a new meat pie recipe that has Londoners raving! Both humorous and macabre, this is a production that is sure to have audiences laughing hysterically one moment and gasping in surprise the next.
