Playwrights Horizons, Inc. produced Once On This Island Off-Broadway in 1990. Originally produced on Broadway by The Shubert Organization, Capital Cities/ ABC, Inc., Suntory International Corporation and James Walsh, in association with Playwrights Horizons
Nominated for 8 Tony Awards including Best Musical during its run original on Broadway, Once On This Island sings and dances the story of Ti Moune, a dark-skinned, orphaned, peasant girl who, after a terrible accident, rescues, nurses and falls in love with Daniel, a handsome, light-skinned man from a wealthy family. When Daniel must return to his world of money and influence, their love is tested by the powerful island gods who seek to discover if love can triumph over prejudice, hatred and even death.
